Improving Your Loved One's Nursing Home Experience

A few years ago, I realized that my dad needed to move into a care facility instead of living with us. He was always depressed and he needed to be around more people his own age. It was a really difficult decision, but after we moved him into a care facility, he really blossomed. It was great to see him happy, healthy, and enjoying things on his own. This blog is here to help other people to enjoy their own lives and to care for loved ones who need special assistance. I know that with the help of assisted living, everyone can enjoy a better life.

An Assisted Living Home Or a Nursing Home — Which Is Right?

Nora Jones

If you are trying to find a place for your loved one to live, you may find that you come into many different options for residence. This means it is important to know the difference between an assisted living home and a nursing home. They are actually quite different.

Do you want to know the difference between the two different options? This is what you need to know.

Care at Assisted Living Homes

The first thing you need to know about assisted living communities is that they typically offer their own small apartments. If you choose an assisted living home for your loved one, you are giving them a place to live independently. They typically do not require much assistance with their daily routine.

So, what kinds of assistance can your loved one expect from an assisted living community? These are some of the major areas of care your loved one may receive help with:

  • Meal preparations and cooking
  • Personal grooming
  • Medication management
  • Laundry and cleaning

If you choose this kind of home for your loved one, he or she will maintain their own furniture, and they can decorate as they see fit. They will likely have access to some form of kitchen as well as a private bathroom and shower. Additionally, they may have access to a social dining area, almost like a restaurant.

Each assisted living home has different safety features to consider as well. So, just because your loved one does not always need assistance does not mean they will not have some form of safety when they live in one of these communities.

Care at Nursing Homes

On the other hand, nursing homes may be more interactive in terms of residents and staff members. In some cases, nursing home residents share a room or receive additional medical care. Often, those who live in nursing homes may require extensive care, perhaps because they have recently had surgery or require memory care. Often, people who have mobility needs will move into nursing homes.

Discuss Your Options With an Assisted Living Professional

If you are unsure which kind of home is ideal for your loved one, it is a good idea to speak with a professional. A professional can help you determine if your loved one is a great fit for an assisted living home or a nursing home. Both are great options for those who have different needs.
